Avi’s account
No Country For Old Men is Cormac McCarthy's
book about a man who finds a suitcase full of drug money in the desert, a
hit man hired to retrieve the money, and an old sheriff who sees the changing
times as he struggles to save a fellow citizen regardless of his flaws. Set
in 1970's, McCarthy’s tale revolves around the violence brought to the southwest
by drug dealers. The rules used by the hit man are poignant even today
where ruthless people justify their actions by following a different
doctrine than that to which an older generation is accustomed. Read the
book, see the Oscar winning movie and decide for yourself!
Sue’s review
The House that George Built:With a Little Help from Irving,
Cole, and a Crew of About Fifty, by Wilfrid Sheed
If you hear the title of a song from the swing era and the words and music pop into your head,
you'll enjoy this book and its breezy style. It's a musical history of the swing era, focused
on the extremely self-confident and generous George Gershwin. The book also covers Irving Berlin,
whose music diverted Gershwin from the classical path he'd been on, and the tunesmiths and
lyricists Gershwin mentored and/or influenced -- the ones you know, like Hoagy Carmichael,
Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, ..., and the ones whose music you love and names you
wouldn't recognize.
A great way to hear some of these songs LIVE is to go to Ellen Ciompi’s concert, "Obsessions"
this Saturday, March 8th at Duke East Campus. See Community Events for more details.
Come pick up a copy of these new books at BookDabbler.

February Trivia winner
Mary Auen is last month’s trivia winner. The question: What 18th century author,
though completing 6 novels, died before completing the final, Sanditon? Answer:
Jane Austen. If you’ve never read Jane Austen, she’s a great classical literature read injecting
humor, a sense of the times, and love into each of her books. Come get one of her books at
BookDabbler for the first time, or to recapture the nostalgia of reading again.
Congratulations Mary!
